Lenten Devotionals

Prologue

The Season of Lent is a gift.  It is God’s gift to the Church to be used as a means of deepening our faith walk with God and preparing our lives for deeper service. Lent is also a spiritual check-up.  Recently, I visited my doctor for an annual physical.  During our time together, he showed me where I am growing healthier – some of the numbers were better than they have been in years, like my blood pressure.  But he also showed me where I am growing less healthy and he showed me what to do to correct those areas.

Lent is our 40 day (plus 6 Sunday) spiritual physical.  Used well, the Spirit will use it to show us where we are healthy according to Christ, our Great Physician, and where we need to make changes to live a more fully in him.

What follows are daily devotional guides to help you along the journey.  They start at the beginning of Lent, on Ash Wednesday, March 5.  They will continue through Easter Sunday, April 20.

Each day, I have provided a scripture reading and recommend you read this first.  Then, there is a short meditation on the scripture, followed by a prayer, all of which are drawn from the songs of our faith.  I urge you to not just read them every day, but to take some time with the readings, allowing them to soak in down deep.  Ponder them, wrestle with them (and God) in your heart.  And consider how they may be Christ’s voice speaking to you.

As I began to write, I found myself harkening back over and over to the story of the Prodigal Son, found in Luke 15:11-32.  The Son’s journey away from his father and back home again provides an opportune metaphor for our own Christian journey.  I would encourage you to read this story before you begin the devotions.

It is my fervent prayer that you find these devotions useful and a vehicle for growth in your faith.  I’d be glad to hear from you and welcome your comments. E-mail me by clicking the following link:  ( Minister )

God bless you on the journey.
